Dean Jones “wrote the book” on one day cricket (Dean Jones:One-Day Magic). A showman, brilliant fieldsman and runner between wickets he was regarded as one of the best one day cricketers in the world – ahead of his time. His ODI batting average of 44.61 is still in the top 20 of all International players.
Dean was also a classic cricketer – he started his Sheffield Shield career in 1981 and retired in 1998. He was first selected for Australia for the West Indian tour in 1984. He captained Victoria, scored a 324, still a Victorian record, and has a Sheffield Shield average of 53.9. His Test average is 46.55 and Bob Simpson described his 210 in the tied test at Madras in 1986 as the greatest innings played for Australia.
He is also a very good golfer with a brief stint as a Professional on the Australian Legends Tour.
In 2006 Dean was made a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for his “service to cricket as a player, coach and commentator, and to the community through fundraising activities for organisations assisting people with cancer”
